Contemporary-art center Disjecta announced this week the artists selected for the Portland2014 Biennial, a major survey of local contemporary art taking place next spring.
The Portland Biennial was founded by Disjecta in 2010 following the Portland Art Museum's replacement of its Oregon Biennial with the regional Contemporary Northwest Art Awards. 2014's Portland Biennial is the first to be curated by a non-local: Los Angeles–based curator Amanda Hunt made the picks.
In a press release announcing the selections, Hunt said that as an outsider, "my aim has been to build a platform that will generate and encourage dialogue—both within the Portland community as well as outside of it."
The press release also notes the breadth of Hunt's selections; indeed, the 15 artists and artist collaboratives which the curator chose out of 300-plus submissions include artists based in Salem, Eugene, and Dayton as well as Portland; both emerging and mid-career professionals; and artists working in a variety of mediums, from installation, to painting, to social-based practices.
The Portland2014 Biennial will take place March 8 to April 27, 2014 at Disjecta and a number of satellite venues. The artists are:
Zachary Davis, Modou Dieng & Devon A. VanHouten-Maldonado, Alex Mackin Dolan, Travis Fitzgerald, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Evan La Londe, Ellen Lesperance, D.E. May, Christopher Michlig & John Zerzan, Personal Libraries Library, Publication Studio, Ralph Pugay, Kelly Rauer, Blair Saxon-Hill, and Richard Thompson
